Inspire Design Helps Students Taking Part in the Avenue School Challenge
Inspire Design were recently approached by North East Derbyshire District Council (NEDDC) to give a talk to Tupton Hall students about sustainable drainage to assist with their Avenue School Challenge Project.
Utilising the Avenue development in Wingerworth, NEDDC are working with partners to increase awareness of construction careers with students and their parents.
The Sustainable Communities CREST Challenge is an exciting and rewarding team activity where participants must plan a sustainable housing development. This is an accredited qualification that is recognised in the construction sector. CREST Awards aim to raise awareness of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) amongst young people and to highlight which careers in construction are linked to these subjects.

Both Tupton Hall School and Parkside Schools now have their own project teams following the launch that took place in September 2018. Tupton Hall are focusing on sustainability and Parkside are focusing on house types and construction (they have a construction option in school). As part of the project they will have two site visits, one in November 2018 and one in February 2019 so they can see how work has progressed on site – that relates to their own projects. Experts, like Inspire, will also be invited into school to give talks that relate to their projects. They will all do an individual reflective report on what they have learned during the process which will be externally assessed. In March 2019, each project team will present their team work to senior management from NEDDC, Kier Living, Homes England, and Derbyshire County Council.
Both team awards and individual awards will be presented at a Celebration Event that is being organised to take place in April 2019.
Last week we spent a rewarding afternoon at Tupton Hall School delivering our sustainable drainage session to a small group of Year 10 students. We were impressed by the student’s enthusiasm and were thrilled by the feedback we received from both the teachers and students taking part. We would like to thank NEDDC for allowing us the opportunity to get involved and we wish all of the students good luck in the delivery of their project.
