Description of Works

This project aimed to redevelop a disused golf course set in 300 acres of reclaimed parkland. The aim was to provide a world class leisure and educational destination including: indoor adventure activity centre, outdoor water courses and lake, gateway building and travel hub, covered events space and amphitheatre, 15KM on-site multi-discipline cycling trails connected to 1000 miles of offsite trails, 2000 hotel rooms and 250 chalets.

Challenges

The Peak Resort site had many challenges such as steep terrain, mining legacy, ecology and access constraints. The project planning and design development has spanned three decades and undergone a number of iterations. The extant permission proposed a new roundabout to provide access to the site alongside the signalising of the northbound off slip from the A61. This roundabout needed to incorporate the new access, the A61 southbound off slip, the B6057 and the A61 southbound on slip.

Solutions

The solution was a tricky balance of providing compliant geometry within the constraints of existing highway land and the presence of the River Drone. The roundabout was unbalanced in terms of the spacing of the arms, making siting and ICD important factors in achieving appropriate deflection. The B6057 south-western arm required widening to provide sufficient capacity through the signals, which was difficult due to the constraints of the A61 overbridge. The success of this project is a testament to the collaborative approach taken by Inspire, Derbyshire County Council and Birchall Properties. Working in alignment with our core values, we delivered this complex access solution on programme and within budget.
